Large Professor – Interview and Freestyle (1996)

Another one from the old tape box – Large Professor talking about his upcoming Geffen album, which as we all know, was never actually released. After the luke-warm reception his two singles received, Xtra P became another tax write-off. But when he chatted with Westwood in New York – late April of 1996 – things were still on track. As usual, Paul makes for an excitable and somewhat eccentric interview subject, sounding as “spacey” as ever. To round things off, Large and his boys from Flushing drop some (drunken/blunted) freestyle action and proceed to “have fun”. And giggle a lot.

Large Professor Interview & Freestyle (Westwood Radio 1 Rap Show, 1996)

Is it just me or did the big guy seem to lose something when he started wearing contacts? As the original “live guys with glasses”, both Large Pro and Zev Love X could be seen proudly sporting their nerd frames in the early nineties. Since they reverted from four eyes to two, things have never been the same. Not to say that they fell-off, but things changed dramatically for both of them. Zev became MF Doom and basically took over underground hip-hop, while Large can’t get arrested. Maybe he needs to dust off those “crystal made of rock glasses”.

I also gotta say Extra P is one of those few who sounds genuinely excited about his music and music in general- thats real hip hop right there and true artistry, he doesnt compromise with the label or trend bullshit and does it for himself

It was weird. Large Pro did a slew of dope beats for Neek The Exotic, Akinyele, The U.N, Wastelandz, X-Ecutioners, Nas, Cormega and that Busta joint with Rae, Ghost and Roc Marciano between ’99 and 2002 and i thought it was on again.

..And then “first class” dropped and aside from a couple of tracks, “stay chisel” and the Akinyele joint, it was utter, utter garbage.

What happened there?

I think he just experiemented too hard with different sounds on 1st Class and didn’t stick to the shit hes known for. I wish him and Nas would do some shit together like a whole album

Glasses over the mask? That’s hardcore.

As far as Large is concerned, I agree that his beats for other people are still winning – maybe Matador got in his ear about “updating” his sound for the album. “Live Guy Saga” was nice though.

I gotta take ya’ll back…
Check out Large Professor’s verse on “Money in the Bank”(Kool G. Rap Album).
To me,that was hip-hop at it’s finest.Large Professor will always be remembered by those who truly understand what being a lyricist is.
