Rap Ballads. The curse of many otherwise spotless ’80’s hip-hop albums, in much the way that Hip House was in 1989 and the token “Southern” records are on many of today’s releases. If you think back to Big Daddy Kane’s first album for example, you’ll find that every track is certified dope except for “To Be Your Man”, and that was one of the better rap ballads! LL must also shoulder a large part of the responsibility, as he downgraded from decent love songs like “I Want You” to the vomit-inducing fairy-floss that is “I Need Love”. Many otherwise respectable groups followed suit, although I’m sure that hit-seeking A&R’s are also somewhat to blame for sappy pap such as Stetsasonic’s “Float On”, Black, Rock & Ron’s “True Feelings”, Mantronix’s “Love Letter (Dear Tracy)” etc.

Jedi Son of Spock Interview

Jedi Son of Spock
first came to light in the mid 90’s with the underground group known as The House Of Reps. The House of Reps to this day remain by and large a mystery due to their low profile insurgence of freestyle mastery and open-mic ascendancy. As a member of the House of Reps, Jedi also appeared on DJ Shok’s “S.O.S/Padlock/Shok Therapy” single on Mass Vinyl Records. This single, among other DJ Shok produced singles, led DJ Shok to go on to working with the Ruff Ryders. In the late 90’s Jedi rhymed in the bathroom freestyle session on Lyricist Lounge volume One, as well as dropping a few mix tape verses for Eddie Ill & DL and the DJ Blowout MC’s compilation.

A few months ago, I wrote a couple of pieces called The Search For Godfather Don and A Tribute To Hydra Entertainment. Not long afterwards, I was contacted by Hydra co-founder Mike Heron, which led to me conducting interviews with both Mike and Jerry Famolari, who currently runs the company. Jerry was kind enough discuss the upcoming Hydra release schedule, and one project in particular had me amped – a “Lost Tapes”-style Godfather Don album is being put together! This is set to include around 15 unreleased tracks from 1999-2001, as well as some songs that have already appeared on 12″s. A maxi-single should be hitting the streets in the next month or so.

On the same night as Jeru was puffin’ a little somethin’ with Westwood, Ghostface and Cappadonna swung through the Radio 1 studios to talk about Ironman. The bad news is that the tape runs out just when things are getting interesting, but before that there’s still plenty of quality Starks quotes. Your man Cappa even starts performing interview hype-man duties after a minute
