The release of the Ultimate Beats & Breaks series in the late ’80′s had a major impact on the sound of hip-hop production, as it gave producers with limited vinyl collections access to some of the beats that used to rock early block parties and rec-room jams. While Ced unearthed his fair share of beats himself, he also didn’t mind puting his own signature spin on classic breaks such as “The Mexican”, which he used on several tracks.

In another great example of Ced-Gee’s programming finesse, he provided Wild Pitch no-names’ Kool D & Technolo G with what has to be the finest use of “The Mexican” ever. “Now Dance”, the A-side of the record is also pretty good beat-wise, while rapper Technolo G does his thing in a fairly perfuctionary manner. For some reason, Stu Fine decided to issue this 12″ with a pink label instead of the usual green background (maybe it was aimed at club DJ’s?), and it’s recently been reissued if you want a better version than my scratched-up copy.

Yes indeed. Alongside “ego trippin’” this is my favorite Ced Gee production.

I’ve been telling people about this track for years now and was pleased when it turned up on that 7.L & Tall Matt mix.

Absolutely slamming. Classic.

Is it me, or is Technolo G seriously sharking Ced-Gee’s rhyming style? It sounds a bit too similar, in my opinion.
