Last Friday, a new Fishscale bootleg/advance hit the “streets” of the internets, but at fourteen tracks deep, I’m 99% sure that it’s nowhere near the offical version (for starters, “Charlie Brown” and “Big Girl” from the sampler aren’t on it). Nevertheless, at least some of these songs will turn up on the real album, so I thought I’d throw you a couple of the stronger cuts. (more…)

DJ Ivory of the P Brothers just blessed me with the A-side of their next single, featuring none other than the notorious Money Boss Players, who have now paired down to Eddie Cheeba and Trey-Bag (from the “Killed In The Crap Game” line-up of MC’s that included Lord Tariq, Big-Ah and C. Dubb) and have flipped the name into the Boss Money Gangsters. The B-side is another Money Boss feature called “Blam Blam For Nottingham”, and will be dropping at the end of March on Heavy Bronx. Bobbito’s Blindfold Test - Large Professor

Truth be told, Vibe magazine pretty much sucked from Issue 0 (yes, they actually put that out). It wasn’t just the numerous pictures of half-naked dudes that made me think that something wasn’t quite right about this Quincy Jones project, most of the reviews and articles were horrible as well. There were some exceptions though, and thanks to regular columns from Bonz Malone, Bobbito and the Rap Bandit (guess The Source didn’t need him anymore once Star and Buck jumped on board), the mag was at least worth a five minute read at the newsagents. Buckwild - RapPages Producer Profile

This one takes me back. Buckwild was destroying shit in 1995 – just take a look at his resume in the intro – he was messing with the cream of the crop at the time. A few of his finest moments fell victim to induckstry bullshit, relegating masterful compositions such as “Life’s A Bitch (Remix 2)”, “Bring It On (The Lost Remix)” and “You Know Now (Remix)” to promo-only / bootleg status. Not to mention his Rakim sessions or the Tony Bones stuff that never saw the light of day (which reminds me – whatever happened to that kid? He was apparently a graphic designer who worked on stuff like Brand Nubian’s Foundation album, as well as appearing on the three songs with Mr. Live, but despite all the hype behind this pale-faced Pom, nothing else ever hit the shelves). Too Stoned For TV - DVD Review

Remember after Cypress Hill first dropped, and suddenly every rap album had at least one song about weed? Many of them used the tired “Mary Jane” formula, while gimmicky groups such as Total Devestation went as far as basing their entire career on the sticky-icky. High Times magazine even did a “Weed & Hip Hop” issue with Redman, Diamond D, Gangstarr and Brand Nubian features, while KRS-One was responsible for the bizarre “I Can’t Wake Up”, where he dreams that he’s a blunt being passed around from rapper to rapper. Strangely, High Times Records released the THC compilation almost ten years after the fad first started (possibly for those who missed out on the ‘90s), which returned to the overly-familiar groud of girls as a metaphor for weed (“My Favourite Ladies”) and a bunch of songs about how awesome trees can be. Wasted Potential?

When news that two of rap’s most eccentric and creative nutjobs (Ghostface & MF Doom) were holed-up in a studio together, working on music, the first thing that sprung to mind was that they’re either cooking-up some mind-blowing, classic shit, or are about to unleash some of the corniest crap ever laid down on two-inch reels. There won’t be any middle ground. (more…)

This shit was a landmark mixtape. Premier Tony Touch hand-picked an all-star team of Crooklyn’s finest and put them together on one tape. Big shout to Affex for making this happen.

Following his superb account of a Ghostface show, Joey delivers another quality rap show recap.

Another classic Mindset moment. It’s only a matter of time until Bill O’Rilley comes sniffing around (no Pudgee The Phat Bastard).

For a guy who thinks sandles are fruity, Killa sure has funny taste in pants (nullus).

Be on the look-out for a lot more updates here at the Tribute from now on, since I’ll be winding-up a seven year bid at my 9-5 next week, in order to “teach the truth to the youth” and all of that.
