New Marley Marl – A Double Dose

Posted on May 12, 2006December 23, 2019 by Robbie Ettelson

It seems Marley Marl has been busy lately, and while there are plenty of stories about credit disputes / ghost producing floating around these days, you can’t deny that after all these years he’s still bringing that gritty “project sound” to everything he touches.

This new remix he did for Busta is a good example, as he replaces the effective (although hardly original) remake of Diamond‘s “I Went For Mine” beat with some earth-shattering drums laid underneath an abrasive electric guitar riff (Jimmy?). Although he’s working on an album with The Blastmasta at the moment, I can’t help but imagine how much better some one like Smiley The Ghetto Child would have sounded over this track.

Less essential is the song he did with Capone and a few of his weed carriers that appears on the Lock & Load compilation. While not as raw as the “NY” remix, it’s still an effective piece that could have done with better MC’s to spark it. I’d advise cutting this joint off after the first verse since the WC’s are fuckin’ awful (pity Flush only does the hook).

Thank you Busta for listing off my favorite producers, hehe.

Looking forward to the KRS/Marley Marl album!

Robbie, what alleged production “credit disputes” were you referring to?

  2. Robbie says:
    May 13, 2006 at

There’s been a few interviews where members of the Juice Crew claimed that they “found most of the loops” on their first albums etc. and I’ve spoken to people that allegedly sold Marley tracks and didn’t get credit.

As far as the first issue is concerned, I tend to agree with Marley’s defense that the producer is “whoever programmed the track”. Bringing the records is only worth a co-production credit at the most.

  3. Cinister Cee says:
    May 13, 2006 at

I agree Robbie. He programmed the beats and often engineered the vocals.

Not to go on a tangent but – I wonder who was bringing records around to Marley when he made the album Mama Said Knock You Out… wasn’t that after he fell out with the Juice Crew?

  4. Robbie says:
    May 13, 2006 at

Apparently K-Def and Joe Fatal both contributed tracks to that project.

If there was No Marley Marl there would be no DJ Premier…truth.

It’s ill to know he is still in the game, now if we could just get a Juice Crew reunion album…

So KRS is doing an album together with Marley Marl now? What happened to the album he was going to do with Da Beatminerz?

  8. Lotuz says:

As far as the first issue is concerned, I tend to agree with Marley’s defense that the producer is “whoever programmed the track”. Bringing the records is only worth a co-production credit at the most.

Imo a producer is “whoever decides how to program the track”. “Whoever programs the track” could be just an engineer following instructions. How creative was Marley Marl with the records that people brought him? Did those people tell him exactly what parts of the records they wanted him to use and how to program those parts or did they leave that to him?

that ny shit remix uses a loop the beatnuts flipped on psycho beats in 97 or so…raw but not as dope as the drunken gangster beat from that same lp.

  10. Robbie says:

“could be just an engineer following instructions”

^ Fair comment but how many engineers knew how to flip the SP in the 80’s (with the obvious excepotion of DJ Doc)?

I need that Psycho Beats and the VIC one as well, apparently even nicer than Hydrabeats #5.

I remember an interview with Chubb Rock back in the days where he’s in a record store pulling out the records that were sampled for the track “Mama Said…”, he could have had some involvement in it since Marley produced his “Lost In The Storm”

  12. mizzensch says:

the beat on this “New York..” remix is something Marley’s been using and reusing for a few years now. He used this beat for the unreleased Mario “Let Me Love You” remix w/ Jadakiss even. And if you ever listen(ed) to his Power 105 radio show, he’s constantly using it for blends etc.

  13. Byron says:
    May 16, 2006 at

I remember that Large Professor was apparently upset at Marley for stealing the beat to Illegal Search (from LL’s Mama Said …) from him? I heard LP discussing this in a telephone interview on Westwood’s show at around the time MSKYO dropped.

  14. cliff says:
    May 16, 2006 at

Yeah co-sign on hearing that beat for months on his future flavas show on 105.1 in NY. I heard another version with KRS-ONE on another webzine, nothing to make a big fuss about. He better enlist Premo or K-Def for some tracks, its just a one bar loop; that album may be a waste of time. At least he’s trying to bring back that unexpected funk back to N.Y. hip-hop. Also K-Def came on board in 1993, no ghost producing on “MSKYO” album, but “14 Shots To The Dome” is another story. Large Professor has been getting ripped off for years, I heard the 3rd Eric B. & Rakim album was mostly him, he got jacked in the elevator for his tracks and a bag filled with rare gems. Check the drums, Eric B was never that ill.

  15. illest says:
    May 16, 2006 at

Im so tired of that beat. He definitely has been using that beat for years on his Friday night flavas show.
Marleys been taking niggaz joints for a minute, see Chief Rocka.
Who is going to check for the Marley and KRS album? Kids 25 and under wont. Cats 25 and up who know Marley and KRS dont care.
Marley should have created a empire and have all Queens cats on it and he would really be paid. Like Dre is doing. Have producers work under you and have rapper start off under you and branch off. That way you will always stay paid. Thats how you keep your name relevant, not through a 2AM Friday night radio show. This is Marley fucking Marl. Everyone should know about him.

  16. Robbie says:
    May 16, 2006 at

Nothing wrong with a one-bar loop! (although if he’s used it on a bunch of othe rremixes that’s pretty weak).

I interviewed K-Def a few weeks ago but I haven’t typed it out yet. He mentioned some of the songs he did for Marley…can’t remember which ones at the moment.

Joe Fatal told me that he did the beat for “Illegal Search” and “Jinglin’ Baby” with Large Pro, back when he was Trag’s DJ, as well as most of the “Intelligent Hoodlum” album.

    @ illest-

    good points brah.

never get the chance to listen to his radio show or i would have probably heard the loop, too.

A Juice Crew reunion album might be dope if it was executed right. Did Marley Marl and his Juice Crew cohorts hold onto their classic flow-I know Biz Markie did but how about the rest of the crew? Can it be done!?…I’m skeptical.

Planet signin out for the Symphony!

Check the beats on Real Live’s criminally underrated “The Turnaround: A Long-Awaited Drama” for more on K-Def’s skills (his partner and rhyme slinger, Larry O, can’t match the heat of K-Def’s beats with his standard crime and coke rhymes). Pure ’90s boom-bap. I always wondered why more cats didn’t get involved with K-Def.

Beef Exist amongst Rockwell Noel, and Marley Marl (both Queens bridge Natives). In one form or another. Fact.
Ill call it Hip-Hop Voodoo or a Recognize thing.
In My research of The Bridge Wars and the Juice crew I find absence any response to KRS-1 From Juice crew Members Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Dj Polo and Kool G Rap! Why? That is what crew is supposed to do, Righttt! Represent!!!!! Were they Juice crew or not! Were they Victims of some sort of botched shady Marley Marl Deals and decided to opt out of any Marley Marl Representations Another story!
I did fine present a Major Representation From Hip Hop Producer, director and Juice Crew Member ROCKWELL NOEL
What I Also Found Is a Lack of Representation, Betrayal, Plagiarism by Marley Marl toward Rockwell Noel who went above and beyond when he fully represented Marley Marl, & Queens Bridge During the bridge wars. Bombing Krs-1 and Bdp with Records Beat U Down and Taking U Out, which brutally smashes Krs-1 to battle.
I duly note that KRS-1 and Marley marl have since ended their feud and ironically the end of their so-called feud was spawned by Rockwell Noels announcement and promotion of taking U OUT.
The two have a grim fear of what really lurks around this release, KRs-1 because he was force to answer Taking U OUT with I/m Still Number one and Marley Marl because of its impact on KRS-1 despite him minimizing play when Marley Marl Was A Dj For Mr. Magic On The WBLS RAP ATTACK Show, what is a mind-boggler is that these two records support Marley with honor against a bunch of bullshit ass rappers an Marley Marl never reciprocated that honor back toward Rockwell Noel. Marley Marl never offer Rockwell Noel a deal at that time he was he CEO of Cold Chillin records and had the power to do so, in-fact Marley marl became so threaten because of the over whelming response of TAKING YOU OUT in which he begged Rockwell Noel To produce that he began to accuse Rockwell Noel of trying to make money from his name. That is some crack head shit. Rockwell Noel Swagger totally Threaten Marley Marl for unknown reasons. It has been discovered that because of Rockwell Noels powerful impact against KRS-1 that would reveal to the planet that Rockwell Noel as a far superior force than any other of Marley Marls friends or other Juice Crew Members and a direct threat to Marley Marls in some form or another. I dont know! Very dysfunctional, Marley Marl and Aaron Fuchs Tuff City Records is facing a severe law suit by Rockwell Noel for scheming and plagiarizing his work including A LINGERING CRIMINAL COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ISSUE as Rockwell Noel Discovers unauthorized releases of TAKING U OUT and non Payment for Beat U Down and the wop sensation remix
BEAT U DOWN AND TAKING U OUT, BEAT U DOWN AND TAKING U OUT currently available ON Bmx/ Bangin Joints Records as an MP3 On Sale Now At Itunes, Rhapsody, Napster, and Amazon MP3 and on 12 inch Vinyl.
