It seems Marley Marl has been busy lately, and while there are plenty of stories about credit disputes / ghost producing floating around these days, you can’t deny that after all these years he’s still bringing that gritty “project sound” to everything he touches.
This new remix he did for Busta is a good example, as he replaces the effective (although hardly original) remake of Diamond‘s “I Went For Mine” beat with some earth-shattering drums laid underneath an abrasive electric guitar riff (Jimmy?). Although he’s working on an album with The Blastmasta at the moment, I can’t help but imagine how much better some one like Smiley The Ghetto Child would have sounded over this track.
Less essential is the song he did with Capone and a few of his weed carriers that appears on the Lock & Load compilation. While not as raw as the “NY” remix, it’s still an effective piece that could have done with better MC’s to spark it. I’d advise cutting this joint off after the first verse since the WC’s are fuckin’ awful (pity Flush only does the hook).

There’s been a few interviews where members of the Juice Crew claimed that they “found most of the loops” on their first albums etc. and I’ve spoken to people that allegedly sold Marley tracks and didn’t get credit.
As far as the first issue is concerned, I tend to agree with Marley’s defense that the producer is “whoever programmed the track”. Bringing the records is only worth a co-production credit at the most.
I agree Robbie. He programmed the beats and often engineered the vocals.
Not to go on a tangent but – I wonder who was bringing records around to Marley when he made the album Mama Said Knock You Out… wasn’t that after he fell out with the Juice Crew?
Apparently K-Def and Joe Fatal both contributed tracks to that project.

Imo a producer is “whoever decides how to program the track”. “Whoever programs the track” could be just an engineer following instructions. How creative was Marley Marl with the records that people brought him? Did those people tell him exactly what parts of the records they wanted him to use and how to program those parts or did they leave that to him?

I remember an interview with Chubb Rock back in the days where he’s in a record store pulling out the records that were sampled for the track “Mama Said…”, he could have had some involvement in it since Marley produced his “Lost In The Storm”
the beat on this “New York..” remix is something Marley’s been using and reusing for a few years now. He used this beat for the unreleased Mario “Let Me Love You” remix w/ Jadakiss even. And if you ever listen(ed) to his Power 105 radio show, he’s constantly using it for blends etc.
I remember that Large Professor was apparently upset at Marley for stealing the beat to Illegal Search (from LL’s Mama Said …) from him? I heard LP discussing this in a telephone interview on Westwood’s show at around the time MSKYO dropped.
Yeah co-sign on hearing that beat for months on his future flavas show on 105.1 in NY. I heard another version with KRS-ONE on another webzine, nothing to make a big fuss about. He better enlist Premo or K-Def for some tracks, its just a one bar loop; that album may be a waste of time. At least he’s trying to bring back that unexpected funk back to N.Y. hip-hop. Also K-Def came on board in 1993, no ghost producing on “MSKYO” album, but “14 Shots To The Dome” is another story. Large Professor has been getting ripped off for years, I heard the 3rd Eric B. & Rakim album was mostly him, he got jacked in the elevator for his tracks and a bag filled with rare gems. Check the drums, Eric B was never that ill.

I interviewed K-Def a few weeks ago but I haven’t typed it out yet. He mentioned some of the songs he did for Marley…can’t remember which ones at the moment.
Joe Fatal told me that he did the beat for “Illegal Search” and “Jinglin’ Baby” with Large Pro, back when he was Trag’s DJ, as well as most of the “Intelligent Hoodlum” album.
The guitar sounds like Fred McDowell or Muddy Waters…though it could be a million other people. Jimi Hendrix never played slide guitar.
