My two penn’eth (only coz I know them): I asked that same very same “keyboard beats” question of Paul & Ivory a few weeks back when I interviewed them for a UK magazine. Both of them have plenty of computer/keys-produced records of all vintages in their collections; they just like great music, regardless of how it’s made – and you’d be insane not to think of music any other way – but they prefer the “hard-but-soulful” loops when they make their own Hip Hop stuff. It’s just how they like to do it – and when they come up with something amazing like Cold World, you can’t really argue.

One of the funniest things they told me (which didn’t make the edit in print due to word count restriction) was about their M.O. whenever they land in New York. They claim to be like kids in a sweet shop and often “get more sensible stuff done in the airport than in a whole week in the city”. One time, they’d been travelling almost 24 hours, got to NY, dumped their luggage at their regular cheap hotel and forsook a shower to immediately go hunting for breakbeats and drinking 40s. They were in some record shop, and dude behind the counter was eyeing them strangely, when they realised they were surrounded by a cloud of tiny black flies. The boys smelled so bad that everywhere they tried to move, the flies followed – despite it being mid-winter. Ivory claimed that his armpit hair had “gone the full cycle, like dredlocks, and were actually starting to clean themselves.”

And that’s why they make such great beats. Flies.

another insightful interview! great commentary on today’s hip hop scene. the whole sociological quality control / rite of passage thing is soooo true.

some production questions would have been nice. are the P Bros against computers and keyboards?

nice one. been championing the p brothers since the big daddy days. ivory nails it when he’s talking rap dollars. having to work a shitty 9-5 to have money to dig and buy gear puts that struggle into your sound. you can hear the blood and the sweat in the music.
