Common Sense & Brand New Heavies – 35 Minute Freestyle Session (1997)

Before Com was making shitty club music and movies, he was a ‘rhyme animal’. Here we catch him blacking-out on Max and Dave‘s The Kiss-FM Rap Show in the UK, joined by British MC legend Tony Rotten of Blak Twang over a live jam session courtesy of the mighty Brand New Heavies.

“Last time I was in London, people seen me drunk…”

Unkut Vs. Combat Jack: EPMD = Great, But Not The Greatest

If you have even the slightest clue about this here rap shit, then you have to acknowledge the fact that Erick and Parrish pretty much had the game in motherfuckin’ headlock with their first four albums. They brought a brand new funk to the scene with Strictly Business, delivered cutting-edge beat science on Unfinished Business and executed a near-flawless B-Boy document with Business As Usual, while Business Never Personal showcased the mighty Hit Squad at the height of their powers while slapping the shit outta listeners with ultra-hard cuts like ‘Boon Dox’. Combat Jack is going to tell you that based on the strength of this discography they automatically qualify as rap’s ‘Dopest Duo’ (word to Craig G), but that’s not the whole equation. My main motivation behind the ‘M.O.P are the greatest’ declaration is the fact that they’ve outlasted everyone and are still bringing that heat. It soon became clear that the most effective way to illustrate the Mash Out Posse‘s superiority is through the classic Take An ‘L’ Comparison Test. Let’s get it in!

Sha Money XL Talks About His Early Days With 50

Finally got around to transcribing my talk with Sha Money XL the other day. Between his work with G-Unit, his One Stop Shop Producers Conference and his Money Management Group, dude doesn’t eff around. I can’t drop the whole thing right now, but there were a few quotes that were worth putting up in light of the new Curtis material due next week.

Robbie: You obviously had a big part in putting together the early 50 Cent mixtapes, right?

Sha Money XL: We recorded every mixtape in my crib – my studio basement in the house. I was the engineer, I self-taught myself. The first record we recorded on ADAT’s and that’s when the digital one came out, and I was able top afford that – somehow, miraculously was able to get that. Bam! I went to work, and we recorded everything, and it was my idea that before we put out the actual mixtape we sprinkled every main DJ with it. We sprinkled Doo-Wop, we sprinkled DJ Clue, DJ Envy. We made sure we covered every DJ that was out there at the time that was poppin’ – Kayslay, Flex, Enuff. We sprinkled it all out and then we collectively put it together with a photo shoot that I had my man Don Morris – who’s one of the top guys at The Source right now – he did the photo shoot for me. I sat in his house and did the lay-out for the graphics and came-up with the whole shit – with the guns and all that – that shit was crazy. Before that, what I did was I took the songs we did together that I produced like ‘Bad News’ and ‘Dead Man Talking’ and ’50 Bars’…

Unkut Vs. Combat Jack: M.O.P = Rap’s Greatest Duo

“M.O.P. are rap’s greatest duo….yeah I said it.” So I threw this out there the other day.

“Huh? This douchebag can’t be serious, can he?” Damn skippy, sonny. Yeah, Run and them are bigger than rap now and let’s be honest, they’re Hip-Hop’s Greatest Trio. Outkast? Meh, they don’t even appear on my radar. Bill and Fame have been delivering that uncut dope without fail ever since they strong-armed themselves into the rap game, regardless of how many times they’ve been cock-blocked by induckstry fuckery. They asked “How About Some Hardcore?” and rap fanatics answered ‘Fuck yeah!’ in no uncertain terms. EPMD might’ve dropped four certified classic albums in a row, but they’ve since tarnished their legacy with the gawd-awful dolo joints and the Days Of Our Lives type ‘make-up to breaks-ups’ shenanigans. When was the last time you rocked the last three Erick and Parrish albums? Exactly.

Black Thought, Common, Pharoahe Monch & Absolute – Live At The Stretch Armstrong Show (1997)

Filed under: Crates,Freestyles,Not Your Average,Steady Bootleggin'

Were you unfortunate enough to cop the supremely underwhelming Lyricist Lounge Vol. 1 LP when it came out? You might recall that the highlight was a recording of a Stretch Armstrong Show freestyle session which assembled Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, Common and Absolute (House of Reps) for a brain-melting display of verbal destruction. At the end it’s announced that this is actually a new group called The Incredible Force – and nothing was ever spoken of the matter again. A few months afterwards, rumors started to circulate of another super-group called the Psychic Friends, consisting of a similar line-up but replacing the lesser-known Absolute with Jeru The Damaja. I never heard anything result from that combo either, but it’s safe to say that based on what was displayed here, the Psychic Friends could have been fuckin’ incredible if they’d recorded an album. Looks like we’ll have to settle on these guys for now.

Kamakazee feat. VS – New Ball Game

It’s been over a year since Kenny Lou passed away, but he’ll never be forgotten by Screwball fans. Here’s a track he did with the ‘first lady of Screwball’, produced by Showbiz‘s right-hand man E. Blaze in 2007, introducing the new line-up for Queens super-group.

Prince Po Isn’t Mad At Nas, May Record New Organized Konfusion Songs

I’ve had this long-standing theory that Organized Konfusion felt some kind of way about Nas “taking inspiration” from their ‘Stray Bullet’ track for It Was Written‘s ‘I Gave You Power’.

Robbie: When Nas did ‘I Gave You Power’ did you take that as a compliment to ‘Stray Bullet’, or were you like, ‘Hang on a sec…’?

Prince Po: I take it as a compliment because anytime somebody gets an idea from something that you did, it’s an honor. Nas has been putting in so much work in the game and coming at people with so much jewels…I never heard him give us props for it, but that’s not what I’m in the game for. I’m not in the game looking for props. I know he was influenced by the song, and just to hear his song was just an honor in itself. I don’t get wrapped–up in ‘Why he ain’t shout us out?’ That’s stupid. We got bigger things to do, we got much more goals to reach.

Shoots the shit outta theory, doesn’t it? He also mentioned that he and Monch did a track together after doing some shows together:
