Markey was the original Flavor unit MC. With his solid, hardcore style mixed with one of my all time favorite 45 King beats his joint “The Mack of Rap” been an anthem for me for decades. I used to see Markey around a couple parties in the early 90′s and I always showed him love – I even mentioned him 2:32 into my joint “On The Block”. He once told Noah at WFMU that R.A. the Rugged Man was the only mo’fucka out there still giving him props. It’s a Damn Shame. He passed away after suffering a stroke. Markey Fresh. I remember the first time I heard him, it was his first demo that red alert played. I was recently converting the tape to MP3 and the deck chewed up the tape!!!! The track was dope, but it was really just Markey Fresh rhyming over track 2 on the 45 King’s first record, the “Just Beats” EP, and the track was called “Raisin”. It was so dope, I tried to find that on wax for a while, before finding out it was just a demo. If anyone else has that tape from Red Alert’s show, let me know. I got Markey Fresh’s second best demo from Red Alert’s show on tape for trade. Came out in ’91 and has the rakim phrase “Now Imma Stop to see What You Got” as the hook. Let’s keep real hip hop alive!!!

We go way back as friends, neighbors, and music biz associates in Irvington, NJ. Although we did many free style sessions together and wrote a couple of songs, it was in the 45King’s basement that we were able to put it all down on tape as the ‘Playboys’, the ‘Educated Two’, or the ‘Disco Force’ (soon available on mp3). And as time passed, my brother & I decided to form our own record company (BEYROCK RECORDS) and recorded our first single entitled, ‘Get Smart on the Crack’ as the TOGETHER BROTHERS. It was DJ Mark 45King that made it possible for us to rehearse live through his sound system while he blessed the turntables with break beats galore. Often times he didn’t eat because he had to “get some more equipment.” Although his time, talent, and efforts have proven to be quite lucrative, he never asked us for a dime!
So, on behalf of DJ Mark 45King, a fellow pioneer & good friend, I would like everyone to know that he is and has always been cool with us. Again, we appreciate, love, and respect him for the endless generosity he showed to us as aspiring entrepreneurs back then!

FYI: This all happened before the Flavor Unit, Queen Latifah, and before Ed Lover & Dr. Dre (‘YO MTV Raps!) first visited his infamous basement in Vailsburg, NJ, (aka, Hooterville). To Mark Jones, (aka, Shakim, Money Mark, Markey Fresh) may you rest in peace my brotha’… we will remember the good times.
