What’s the greatest remix in rap? Tough question. A lot of people might say Pete Rock‘s remix of ‘Shut ‘Em Down’, but I figure the best way to narrow down the field is to group it by artist or crew for each round. You might want to grab some popcorn, this could take a while…
Mr. Walt & DJ Evil Dee are the foundation of Da Beatminerz crew, even though it’s membership has at various stages included Baby Paul, Rick Black, Chocolate Ty. and even Aaron “Freedom” Lyles and Ike Lee for the ‘Poppa Large’ remix (which Walt and Evil Dee weren’t involved with so I’m excluding it). While the crew has delivered some of their strongest work on original projects, they’ve also laced some top-notch remixes over the years. Here are eight of the best:
The Roots - Silent Treatment [Da Beatminerz Remix]

Tie between I Gotcha Open Remix and Buckem Down Remix. In the end, Buckem Down wins — and the video was awesome (to me at least).
You forgot to include their remix of Return of the Mack though! LOL.
Comment by haroon 07.07.10 @I’ll always remember the first time I’ve heard “Got Cha Opin” remix… chills went down my spine instantly.
But my fav Beatminerz remix is without a doubt “Brown Sugar”… in my top 10 tracks ever. Plus there’s a 10/10 G Rap verse in it so what more can you ask for?
Comment by lifers crew 07.07.10 @I always liked the og of Various Shadez Of Black better. Not sure if it was a demo or what though. I know it was on that white label EP of Rakims back in like 95/96.
It was between Buck Em Down and Silent Treatment.
Went with Silent Treatment probably cause I always dug how they flipped that same Cornbread Earl sample that Primo did for “Say You Prayers”. And I pretty much played the hell out of the Buck Em Down remix back then.
Buck Em Down (Remix) and Robbie, I’d doubt that they would touch you but I had a Da Beatminerz compilation at my blog and got a notice from DMCA so I to take it down.

Comment by Suave C 07.07.10 @I Gotcha Opin for sure. I’ve been listening to that shit regularly for about 2 years and I haven’t got bored of it yet.
Comment by Mag7Music 07.08.10 @I Gotcha Opin, definitely…I like how Da Beatminerz
came with a completely fresh sound for those last few 12″ from Enta Da Stage, they even made Buck ‘Em Down take on a different feel with the more-or-less the same fuckin’ sample! Good call Lifers Crew–I still get the chills from that shit, one of my favorite records of all time. The original was ill but the Barry White sample kills it every time….
the black moon remixes for sure. though i definitely fuck with that proceed v remix.
mop’s new york salute is definitely a better use for the tony williams sample than d’angelo
Comment by roccotuna 07.08.10 @Black moon’s first then roots rmx’s
my two cent for buck ‘em down
and dudes still have beats
Comment by command 07.09.10 @@dolo That was Ike Lee and Aaron “Freedom” Lyles, whom as far as I know was the first line up of Da Beatminerz.
Comment by Jaz 07.09.10 @the remix for various shades of black is ill very underated i got you open remix is so well loved cause there was a video for it so every one saw and had a chance to see and hear it.
Comment by derrick 07.13.10 @Saying Black Moon is just too typical …never really like anything outside of Duck Down releases .
SILENT TREATMENT was ill though …
Gotta go with the obvious, Buck em down #1, got cha opin close second…These tracks stand the test of time..No bullshit, 2 of the greatest hip hop songs ever..Buck was at his pinnacle here(along with how many MC’s)..That D’Angelo has the link for the Rakim joint, could somebody fix that?? That D remix is ill..
Comment by bsked 07.29.10 @“silent treatment”. i wish i had the remix, because i can hardly bear the album version these daze.
