Searching For The Perfect Remix: Wild Card Round

A few weeks back I asked if anyone had any ideas for the Wild Card Round, but after going through the list I decided to go back to the drawing board and pick eight essential remixes that haven’t been covered yet. Once this is decided, the winners of this and the previous eight rounds will battle it out for the title of The Greatest Remix Of All Time, at least according to Unkut’s Conservative Rap Coalition (aka The East-Coast Rap Elitists). Whether on the strength of the new lyrics or just taking an otherwise shitty track and making it sound good, these eight remixes all win in their own way.

A Tribe Called Quest feat. L.O.N.S. & Kid Hood – ‘Scenario’ (Remix)

Black Sheep – ‘The Choice Is Yours’ [Revisited]

Boogie Down Productions – ‘I’m Still #1’ [Numero Uno Re-Recording]

Common – ‘Resurrection’ [Large Professor Remix]

FU-Gees – ‘Nappy Heads’ [Remix]

Mobb Deep – ‘Shook Ones, Pt. II’

Nas – ‘The World Is Yours’ [Remix]

The Beatnuts – ‘Get Funky’

What Is The Best Wild Card Remix?

  • Mobb Deep - ‘Shook Ones, Pt. II’ (36%, 60 Votes)
  • A Tribe Called Quest feat. L.O.N.S. & Kid Hood - ‘Scenario’ (Remix) (27%, 44 Votes)
  • Nas - ‘The World Is Yours’ [Remix] (9%, 15 Votes)
  • Black Sheep - ‘The Choice Is Yours’ [Revisited] (8%, 14 Votes)
  • The Beatnuts - ‘Get Funky’ (7%, 11 Votes)
  • Common - ‘Resurrection’ [Large Professor Remix] (5%, 9 Votes)
  • FU-Gees - ‘Nappy Heads’ [Remix] (4%, 7 Votes)
  • Boogie Down Productions - ‘I’m Still #1′ [Numero Uno Re-Recording] (4%, 6 Votes)

Total Voters: 165

Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full (Coldcut’s Seven Minutes of Madness) mix might need an inclusion…

Comment by khal 10.06.10 @

^ Not on my watch! A case could be made for it, but I never liked that remix.

Comment by Robbie 10.06.10 @

Voted for the numero uno but two of my favorite remixes of all time was Stets (talkin all that jazz) and PE’s (night of the living baseheads). Both were out at the same time and I made sure they were on every tape I had.

Comment by illroy 10.06.10 @

I know it’s barely known, but:
Tim Dog – Bronx Nigga (DJ Shame remix)
It doesn’t win this competition, but it wins.

Comment by Superdocstrange 10.06.10 @

I think you picked the wrong Resurrection remix. Should have been the “Extra P Remix”.

Doesn’t really matter anyway since I can’t look past Shook Ones Pt. II!

Comment by Ross 10.06.10 @

really? world is yours q-tip mix isnt first? at least second? no words.

Comment by Mike 10.06.10 @

by the way, there’s other beatnuts productions to better represent them (not that get funky is a bad song or anything).

Comment by Mike 10.06.10 @

The Keep on Searchin’ remix by LL Cool J should have been included

Comment by mutual 07 10.06.10 @

That Jump around remix by pete rock for House of Pain def should have been included. But I think I’d still have to go with that ATCQ remix. CRAZY!

Comment by MalMoe 10.06.10 @

I had to go for Fugees even though the orig’ is almost as good.

Surely Shook Ones Part II is just that, the second part. it cant be a remix and a sequel…

I’d say it’s a remix since only Prodigy’s verse was rewritten; the chorus and Havoc’s verse were the same in Pt. II.

P.S. I’d have gone for Nappy Heads second.

“I think you picked the wrong Resurrection remix. Should have been the “Extra P Remix”.”

^yea that one should’ve been here..but the Scenario rmx is the joint…lotta crazy shit used to happen wheneva i threw that one on back in the house/basement party days

Comment by Unkut 10.06.10 @

This is easy… SCENARIO (REMIX), hands down!!

And to top it off, I remember Q-Tip talking about Kid Hood and how he came into the studio drinkin a 40 and went right into the booth with the 40 and spit his verse in 1 take. 2 or 3 days later dude was killed. It’s a shame cuz dude was nice!

Comment by Shaun D. aka Wicked 10.06.10 @

I had to listen to The Infamous on the way to football tonight – it’s so fucking hardcore it’s ridiculous; especially for a couple of 19-year-olds.

Comment by Ross 10.06.10 @

“The Choice is Yours” revisted is that shit too, still has staying power, just check out the latest Kia commercial, but for sure ATCQ’s “Scenario” remix is incredible same goes for “Shook Ones pt II”…I also suggest Das Efx’s “Jussummen” Pete Rock remix as well…

Comment by maad 10.06.10 @

@Ross: The problem with that mix is that the vocals don’t really sync-up very well.

@MalMoe: ‘Jump Around’ was in the Pete Rock round already.

@RowanB: Havoc has said he considers it a remix.

Comment by Robbie 10.06.10 @

How ’bout the Originals better than the remixes, case and point Mobb Deep – “Temperature’s Rising” original mix is nicer than the album version…

Comment by maad 10.06.10 @

I voted for Shook Ones but that Resurrection remix is the sleeper.

good call on that Stet remix for Talkin’ All That Jazz. The first and best use of that Donald Byrd break.

Comment by oskamadison 10.07.10 @

Shook Ones is by far the best track, but as mentioned isn’t an actual remix. It’s more like a version 2.0.

Comment by The Funkologist 10.07.10 @

Robbie is being an idiot again..
Shook Ones II is not a remix.

Comment by Qwermoo 10.07.10 @

A remix I’ve recently rediscovered but forgot about for the requests is Rae and Ghosts’s Rainy Dayz (Long Dirty Mix)(remix by Mr. Dalvin from Jodeci).

Discogs has got Diamond mixing and programming it too.

Check it.

Comment by Ross 10.07.10 @

@ Robbie

I’ll admit the production of the original and the other remix fit the vocals better but the Extra P Remix instrumental is serious.

I also back Shook Ones being a remix (^see previous comment). Plus, it should be included in any list of good things for being one the best songs ever created!!

Comment by Ross 10.07.10 @

Aight Robbie. But im sure i’ve also seen havoc claim in an interview that shook ones pt 2 doesnt sample Ron Grainer’s “Thackeray Meets Faculty” even though it blatantly does; but fair enough its his beat if he says its a remix then it is :)

Comment by RowanB 10.07.10 @

I kind of have a hard time accepting “Shook Ones Pt. II” as a remix as well… The song title says it all, PART 2!!!! And as great as that song is, it’s definately played the fuck out. I hate going to Hiphop Clubs/Bars/Lounges where some lame DJ plays all the same tired typical shit every other lame DJ plays. I almost never spin that song anywhere for that reason. I always dig DEEP into my crates and play shit people don’t ever really hear. It’s funny how even so-called “True Hiphop DJ’s” even seem to have the same lame playlists. *shaking head*

Comment by Shaun D. aka Wicked 10.07.10 @

@ Ross, I’m curious why that “Rainy Rayz (Remix) by Raekwon is such a big deal regarding the Diamond D. programming and what not? I have that record (yes record, not a lame mp3) and actually picked it up back in ’96 and the credits on the record clearly state all the info. So uhhhhh, yeah… ?

Comment by Shaun D. aka Wicked 10.07.10 @

Overall Pete Rock had the best run of remixes

some other favorites

Ultramagnetic MC’s – Poppa Large (Ike Lee & Aaron Lyles Remix)
LL Cool J – Illegal Search (Marley Marl Remix)
Chi Ali – Funky Lemonade (Beatnuts Remix)
Bush Babees – Remember We (Salaam Remi Remix)
Grand Puba – That’s How We Move It (Grand Puba Remix)
KMD ft. Brand Nubian – Nitty Gritty (KMD Remix)

Comment by Grand Gritty 10.07.10 @

Grand Gritty comes correct with the “Illegal Search” (Keep on Searchin’) Marley Marl remix on the B side of the “Jingling Baby” 12″- a truly underrated remix

Comment by mutual 07 10.08.10 @

and the demo mix of Ultramagnetic Mc’s “Message From the Boss” is lovely too.

Comment by mutual 07 10.08.10 @

“The World Is Yours (Q-Tip Remix)” is patently #1 queers. Incidentally, this track was apparently never issued uncensored – however, someone on Philaflava forums painstakingly reversed the edits so you can hear this absolute Golden Age classic as nature, and not the white man, intended. I’d upload it myself but I don’t have access to the hard drive it’s located on.

“Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full (Coldcut’s Seven Minutes of Madness) mix might need an inclusion…
Comment by khal 10.06.10”

You must be out of your tiny fucking mind. I can’t think of a single UK remix of a Golden Age classic that was better than the original – the pretentious mauling of a three minute classic like “Paid In Full” a perfect example of how bad they often were. Oh yeah, and fuck CJ Macintosh and Dave Dorell too, fucking homos.

Comment by TokyoSexwale 10.08.10 @

Here, I uploaded…

Nas – The World Is Yours (Q-Tip Mix) *Unreleased Explicit Version*

Comment by Shaun D. aka Wicked 10.09.10 @

‘Boogie Down Productions – ‘I’m Still #1′ [Numero Uno Re-Recording]’

“MR MAGIC IS NOT DOWN WITH US” !! Wow!! not too many natives on this board or just too young.. better yet not privy to listen outside the TRI to hear this REMIX every weekend back in late 88′

.. anyway thanks for that NAS

Comment by setrule 10.09.10 @

THxs Robbie for posting Black Sheep. Definately my number 1…. hmmm except scenario. First time I’ve heard KRS’s no.1. Surely a remix has to be better than the orginial!

Comment by Dan_e_fresh 10.09.10 @

As much as I wanted to vote for Black Sheep, I ended up voting mobb deep for shook ones pt II.

@Shaun D: I don’t know what dope bars or clubs you frequent, but I never hear real shit like that, always some bullshit teenie bopper lil wayne or drake or other terrible down south rap, I say you stop complaining about hearing bad music at the club when its clearly not bad, shook ones pt II is one of the most classic songs ever and it still beats a lot of rap songs nowadays, don’t make me all caps a reply comment a-la Prodigy

Ooops already covered…

Comment by Kize 10.10.10 @

@ gstatty, I don’t know where you’re from and what not, but I’m from the Bay Area out here in Cali where Hiphop Music & Culture is loved and accepted. San Francisco has plenty of spots where the DJ’s like myself spin that real shit!

But yo, “Shook Ones Pt. II” is played the fuck out! YES, it’s a classic, but I’m tired of all the DJ’s who spin real Hiphop spinning the same tired shit. I still remember hearing that song for the first time in ’94 and being blown away. Thing is, when you’ve heard it over 1,000 times, it gets old. And like I said, when DJ’s all have very similar playlists, that’s maad lame too! I pretty much come up with a unique playlist for almost every spot I spin at… I even do themes like how I do on my radio show and on my Mix CD’s. Maybe I’ll spin all Primo produced shit, or Pete Rock… Or maybe I’ll spin all Golden Era Up-Tempo shit, or maybe spin all Hiphop from 1993, etc.

Comment by Shaun D. aka Wicked 10.11.10 @

One time a couple of years ago I was spinning 90 minutes of all Golden Era Up-Tempo Hiphop meaning all Golden Era shit over 100 beats per minute. Well, Peanut Butter Wolf was in the house chillin and was even spinning after me and he fuckin LOVED my set… He said he really hadn’t heard someone spin most of the shit I spun in forever! My man Kevvy Kev was in the house loving shit too. Only a couple of the songs I spun that night were singles… I spun all album cuts, b-sides, remixes, etc. THAT’S HOW YOU DO SHIT!!! You don’t spin all the same shit the next man is spinnin and you most definately don’t spin the played out shit that people have heard a million and one times. Word the fuck up!!
