Shook Ones Part II ftw.

People voted the Best Kept Secret remix one of the best remixes ever? Really? A remix which isn’t even half as good as the original and which noone would care about if 45 King hadn’t done it.

The Stress remix sucks too because the oppressive tone of the lyrics don’t fit with uptempo jazzy horns.

Also, can’t you replace that Funkdoobiest remix with the Check Yo’ Self remix or the Pocket Full Of Stones as your token non-east coast song or something?

Comment by MF 10.14.10 @

With all being mentioned i still can’t count Shook Ones Part II as remix, cuz nearly nobody heard firs part.
So PR & PE wtw!

I though I was the only one think it.

Comment by Ross 10.14.10 @

of all time none of these…but on the list its between stress and shut em down….easily

Comment by mercilesz 10.14.10 @

like wheres get off the bandwagon? oh jingling babys up there? yep that one and stress and shut em down…..

Comment by mercilesz 10.14.10 @

Almost forgot, my favorite remix of all time – Pete Rock for Jamal “Fades Em All”(Pete Rock Remix). How can we go without it?

Comment by andrewfromrussia 10.14.10 @

Dman, this shit is a straight murderer’s row of remixes. It’s going to take a minute but on first instinct, just going on the improvement upon the original, I GOTTA run with the Shut ‘Em Down joint. That shit will have you wanting to go to war…for no reason. I Got Cha Opin was ill, too but the original wasn’t that bad to begin with. Same with Jingling Baby and Best Kept Secret. Shut Em Down was at a time where PE’s beats severely fell off (replacing the Bomb Squad with…the Imperial Grand Ministers of Funk?…really?) Pete saved them with this joint (and the often overlooked Nighttrain remix.)

Comment by oskamadison 10.14.10 @

Voted for the PE joint but Black Moon was a close second

Comment by BIGSPICE 10.14.10 @

ahhh dont front, you know I gotcha open… the laid back flow and the new beat completely changed up the vibe while still retaining the greatness of the song

Comment by ADA 10.14.10 @

I know other people said this in the wild card round, but… don’t vote for “Shook Ones” – it shouldn’t qualify as a remix!

Comment by djbosscrewwrecka 10.14.10 @

Now can we get all these remixes in an exclusive Unkut mixtape format? That would be love.

Comment by MalMoe 10.14.10 @

Yeah, been said before, but it needs to be said again. Even though I’d agree that it is the best song up here, Shook Ones Part II isn’t a remix. Very few people ever heard Shook Ones part I before hearing part II. It seems that part I could be seen as more of a demo then a remix I’m aware that people have pointed out that Mobb Deep think of it as a remix, but that in itself doesn’t make it so. As much as I like to think of myself as a hard core gangster, it still doesn’t seem to be the case.
Best song up here, but if this is a contest for best remix, it will be a shame if it wins.

Comment by King Tut 10.14.10 @

Seeing the list, I am now thinking I was wrong to assume PE as the greatest (obvious choice though). The winner should be Black Moon.
Shook Ones is great, but I agree it don’t count it as a remix in this context at least.
Going to the polls now.

Comment by keatso 10.14.10 @

That Rock on remix will never win, but that shit still blows my mind. So ill.

Comment by keatso 10.14.10 @

Shook Ones Pt II Again? C’mon man..
Stop being an idiot.

Comment by Qwermoo 10.15.10 @

Shook Ones will win, simply cause it’s a classic joint. Still not a remix in my book tho, so I voted for PE.

Comment by The Funkologist 10.15.10 @

picked pe but the best remix ever is the vinyl reanimators remix of fast life.

Comment by 4:20 10.15.10 @

“Shook Ones Pt II Again? C’mon man..
Stop being an idiot.”

^ Just for that I’m rigging the poll and adding 100 votes for the Mobb.

Comment by Robbie 10.15.10 @

The Imperial Grand Ministers Of Funk never existed, apart from Gary G-Wiz, who actually produced the whole of that Apocalypse 91 album, which I actually think is a massively underrated album, but I’m a bit of a PE obsessive, and at least partially like all of their albums, even Greatest Misses and Muse Sick, so I might be biased. Shit, I actually like the original of Shut Em Down almost as much as the Pete Rock remix.

Comment by Mag7Music 10.15.10 @

Oh, and I’m going with what others are saying in that Shook Ones Pt 2 is not a remix, it’s a re-recording, with altered lyrics. It’s like the improved version, but it ain’t a remix by any definition I know of.

Comment by Mag7Music 10.15.10 @

Oh no! Plz dont do it!!

*Sittin in the corner crying*

Comment by Qwermoo 10.15.10 @

I voted PE & PR

Comment by LEX 10.15.10 @

Without question Biggie’s
“One More Chance” Remix >>>>>>>>>>>>>

So because it was probably a little too smoothed out for Robbie’s Taste; I’ll go with Mobb’s “Shook One” or PE’s “Shut em down”

Comment by BKThoroughbred 10.15.10 @

5th invented the remix 😉

Comment by raw 10.15.10 @

jingling baby for me, it sort of made me look forward to the mama said you knock out LP, as LL was seriously falling off before marley marl give him some heat. I think the 12″ was jingling with illegal search on the b-side which was another nice track. Damn i miss buying 12″ records on a friday after work.

Comment by sg 10.15.10 @

I agree w/people who say Shook Ones II shouldn’t count as a remix.

Comment by Ivan 10.15.10 @

T-LaRock – Breaking Bells – or anything else produced by Kurt Mantronik or Chep Nunez!

Comment by Dave 10.15.10 @

you fucked up and didnt include NAS THE WORLD IS YOURS QTIP REMIX!!!! thats my vote. next week who knows what id say tho.

Comment by dfacedxa 10.15.10 @

hmmmm….Craig Mack “Flava in Ya Ear ” Remix not on the list? i guess thats a pick for the greatest posse cut of all-time. But it should get some recognition as one of the greatest remixes ever.

Comment by Brandan E. 10.15.10 @

@BKThorougbred has a point with the One more chance remix.
Overlooked for obvious reasons, that remix was indeed a game changer, so much so that Puff thinks he invented the remix to this day.

Comment by keatso 10.15.10 @

I went with PR and PE. Black Moon is a close second. Shook shouldn’t be on this ballot.

Comment by Rap Hands 10.16.10 @

Here’s one nobody mentioned. The Bridge is Over LP version. If you owned the 12″ there’s 2 versions, the radio version and the dirty version. The radio version has Red Alert and the vocals are a lil different.

The Buddy Remix – Native Tounges

The Can I Kick It Remix – A Tribe Called Quest

Where I’m From (remix) – Digable Planets

Comment by 5 Grand 10.16.10 @

List is like a box of chocolates.. But I have to go with “fakin’ jax” rmx, the original was supreme but Peter took the remix to another level. Honerable mention goes to “in the meantime” (nostrand ave. Remix) black sheep did a fine job of blending yard riddems wit fi yankee selections.

Comment by Edubz 10.17.10 @

are y’all stupid or what??? shook ones pt.2 ISN’T A REMIX!!!! different lyrics plus first appearance on the same 12″ ( http://www.discogs.com/Mobb-Deep-Shook-Ones-Part-II/release/196057 ) = NOT a remix…
“soul on ice” for the win!!! but SHOW&AG and BLACK MOON are really close…

Comment by DaGrimeyWay 10.18.10 @

I think a real remix is same lyrics/different beat. If you add new vocals then it’s not a remix, it’s a different song with the same title. My vote went to Next Level as Premo gave AG one of the greatest beats of all time. Nuff respect to Show, though.

Comment by ceedub 10.18.10 @

There were a few bright spots on Apocalypse (of course Can’t Truss It, Arizona, Get The Fuck Outta Dodge and Lost At Birth) but Shut Em Down just didn’t really move me like that. Out of all the songs listed, I thought Shut Em Down benefitted the most from the remix. BTW, Greatest Misses was a sleeper, the new material at least. Gotta love how on Hazy Shade of Criminal, PE repaid Ultramagnetic the favor of snatching their shit (Break North).

Comment by oskamadison 10.18.10 @

BTW, Shook Ones, pt. 2 WAS a remix. Slightly altered verse from Havoc and the hook was pretty much the same. If pt. 2 wasn’t a remix then One More Chance wasn’t either.

Comment by oskamadison 10.18.10 @

Show & AG – ‘Next Level’ even tops Shut ‘Em down for me. Such a top track. YOu know it’s good when they make the video for the remix and not the original.

Comment by farns 10.20.10 @

Ultramagnetic MCs – Poppa Large (Da Beatminerz East Coast Mix)

is the GOAT remix, imo.

Comment by KQ 10.20.10 @

farns the original video for that exists dude…

Comment by mercilesz 10.20.10 @

I don’t know what the polls say but it has to be PR and PE “Shut ‘Em Down” … While Marl revamped LL’s career, Pete Rock sustained PE as relevant for at least another 6 to 12 months. It was PE’s last wide spread acknowledged “hot” hip hop song & launched Pete Rock’s career worldwide & it firmly established get a hot producer to remix your track trend of 90s

Comment by djarm18 10.23.10 @

I really can’t decide here.

Comment by Jaz 10.25.10 @

I still love Jeru The Damaja – Can’t Stop The Prophet (Pete Rock Remix)

I voted PE/PR

Comment by Mec-One 10.30.10 @

shook ones did get airplay…..
ain’t a crook son
just a shook one

but part 2 just was a monster….

the shut em down remix was a close second, only cause…PR improved on the bomb squad!!!! and they NEVER EVEr EVER played the original after that.

only way you’ll ever hear that song again is if you have an old vhs tape of def comedy jam and play the closing credits…
