Great interview Robbie. The first 6 years of The Source was something special. I still got all of my old copies in good condition too. Even the “Decade Of Hip Hop”. That shit really was like the bible to a young nigga like me.

Tim Westwood got tracks before New York all the time, which made his show a masterclass in tunes, drops and production, without the NY politics from 1988-1994. John Shecter used to call in on a Friday night around 9p.m NY time and keep U.K heads up-to-date with all the goings on in NYC. Westwood would sign off: “And we’ll speak in 7 days time, my bro.” Great times and anyone of that era IS hip-hop- truly living through its greatest apex. I read a paper Matty C did for Social Psychology at NYU when i was a student there (although I’m originally a Londoner) and he managed to create this amazing paper about memory using hip-hop. It was genius. Brings back memories. And the Source for a long time was the integrity-driven bible of rap music. Pity what happened, happened.

I grew up in Newton Centre, MA and I grew up listening to their radio show. Everything he said is true. I remember calling in to request a song and they’d ask for your name and address. Next thing I knew I was getting The Source in the mail.

I don’t remember how but somehow’ I had knowledged the Source long before I got my 1st copy (probably Yo! or Rap City)…anyway I copped my 1st issue (X-CLAN cover) @ some podunk Walgreens…NO RECORD STORES round my way had that shit early on…fucking Walgreens!
