Time for another Complex list, this time around on a topic that’s close to my cold, cold heart – record label history. With 2013 marking 30 years in the business, I wrote about the best fifteen years of the iconic label, based on my highly-scientific formula of Sales x Influence x Artistic Merit x Coin Flip.

Red and Meth are on there. It’s about sales and impact, so of course Ashanti and Frank Ocean are mentioned.

But really, why Onyx not mentioned?

Fifth of never is when I’m going to click through these bullshit Complex stories again… I like your work Robbie but Complex is fugazy for readers.

I probably would have put 1998 as number 2 as the revival year or 1999 in the top 5 because of the Hard Knock Life Tour. Also I think some of the lean years like 94 despite key releases could have been replaced with 2006 which was a rather impressive year for them sales wise despite the start of lower album sales and smaller promotion for the older acts (Remember Nas Def Jam debut, Hov’s comeback album, Roots def jam debut, 2 successful Ghostface albums, Meth’s underrated 4:21, Ne-Yo’s big debut and Rhianna’s second and more successful follow up all came out that year)
