This one passed me by when it first came out, even though I used to play the shit out of Spoonie Gee’s The Godfather of Hip-Hop LP. The weird thing about that album is I only bought it after a friend of mine asked me to replace his copy which he left on the train, but between the time that I picked up the album for him and I got a chance to hand it over, dude changed his mind and didn’t really want the album anymore. Lucky for me, in the interim I had taped a copy for my Walkman and had grown rather attached to Spoonie’s late eighties renaissance period. Blending some raw Marley Marl beats, some early New Jack Swing from Teddy Riley and a few ballads which were a lot more convincing than many of the period, Spoonie’s Tuff City LP proved to be a guilty pleasure for me on those long train rides to school.
Thirty years later, and I finally managed to hear a crappy web rip of Marley’s long forgotten remix to Gabriel Jackson’s ode to Brooklyn’s favourite son in the eighties, and I’m happy to report it’s a pretty radical reworkign of the beat for a 1989 release, with new drums, bassline and hook.
“I only bought it after a friend of mine asked me to replace his copy which he left on the train” Would you also give him head, if he hadn’t gotten some in a while?
@N–: Reaching. I lived closer to the record shop and dude was gonna give me the cash for it but I ended up keeping the record.
Was this ever released ? only heard this remix on westwood a couple of times, never seen or heard it since.
Is there a remix of Did You Come To Party on this 12″ as well?
Original gotta be one of the best Spoonie x Teddy tracks.
@Agagreatgallah: The snippet I heard sounds the same as the LP mix.
@Clapa: Yeah, the 12″ cover is at the top of the post.
This musta been the only photoshoot Fuchs ever let Spoonie do, so he got as many pix of him in that tracksuit in front of that bluescreen as possible
uses the same sample as Cypress Hill’s Real Estate. Westwood used to rinse this track, but then he was best buddies with Marey Marl
Yep I thought I heard Cypress. Muggs flipped that shit…
@Andrew Kay – Tony Alvon & the Belairs “Sexy Coffee Pot” is the sample
Spoonie was the man before there was a man. What’s up with the word ” Favorite”? Why you gotta put a ” U” in that much that motherfucking word?
C’mon Kid!
