For many Donny Brasco fans, the Hydra singles that didn’t make the Diabolique album stand as some of his finest work. Even if you have all of these on vinyl, having proper CD versions always beats ripping it from the wax. You can order it here.
Last year Timeless Truth created a watershed moment for Hip-Hop, for ‘Lo heads and for NYC in general. Their ‘Priceless’ video shoot at the Brooklyn Bridge brought together a few dozen hardbody collectors of the lifestyle and more importantly it was the first time I had ever politicked with Thirstin’ Howl the 3rd on some brotherhood shit. Of course I knew of Thirst since he was in the streets. Everyone knew of each other, Decepticons, Lo-Lifes, A-Team, and there was an uneasy peace that existed to this day. (more…)
I learned some crazy shit doing my thing in New York City over the past forty years. Basically, the world is a huge place, but the people that vibe along the same frequency is the smaller subset and y’all will always find each other. That is what used to happen at record stores when you would go there on a Tuesday and meet up with other hip-Hop heads who were trying to copp that same release dropping that day.
I was on the Jamaica Ave strip with a bunch of my homies doing some shit called ‘Sneaker Fiends Unite!’ We travel around the city looking for kicks comeups and peeping how gentrification changes the urban landscape. At a store on the strip this husky dude told me that my ‘Lo scarf was official. I gave him some dap for recognizing that shit. Real recognize real always. Dude said he had some pieces to deal. This is the language that collectors use when they are selling and swapping I.T.’s (items). We exchanged maths and kept it moving.
Later that night when I got back to the lab and started uploading the video footage I had made that afternoon I stopped by UnKut for a minute to just check in on the old head rap scene. If you don’t cut your NahRight or 2DopeBoyz with some UnKut shit you will get rap diabetes from all the saccharine in the game right now. Funny story, true story is that very day Robbie had a drop on his page featuring the dude that I politicked with in that sneaker store – Meyhem Lauren (more…)
My peoples, Timeless Truth, were invited to Fat Beats last week to record some video for U.K. superstar DJ Sarah Love. Timeless Truth always represents the Polo Ralph Lauren lifestyle to the fullest. It is deeper than just getting dipped and making sure you are color coordinated. Its about your presentation to attain the lavish lifestyle through rhyme or crime. (more…)
This week’s episode of The Combat Jack Show included a guest host by the name of NY Delight and some folks calling in, including some douche hammer called Robbie from Unkut dropping science on the Greatest Weed Carrier of All-Time.
Yesterday saw the announcement that the brick and mortar stores of Fat Beats would be closing their doors in New York and LA after sixteen years:
Fat Beats will celebrate the legacies of the stores, which are scheduled to close in early September (New York: September 4th, Los Angeles: September 18th) by throwing a series of blow-out sales and tribute parties open to the public during their last weeks. Fans can check FatBeats.com for updates.
The Fat Beats brand isn’t dead by any means, as the online store and the record label will continue to rep independent hip-hop, but this announcement certainly marks another turning point in the decline of vinyl sales and the changing face of rap retail. I’ve asked some regulars to share some of their fondest memories of the iconic NY store over the next week or so in tribute to the spot, so let’s set it off with some of Marco Polo‘s favorite moments: (more…)
Not sure how I missed the debut last week, but I just caught the second episode of The Combat Jack Radio Show with Dallas Penn on PNC Radio, and I think it’s safe to say we’ve got a keeper on our hands.
Since the username saint163 had zero feedback, it seemed worthy of investigation to see if this was legit. Here was the response:
That’s the codename alias in DITC.. saint or seldomseen.. 163.. is the street in Forest Projects.. where I grew up at. There’s nothing to be concerned about.. This is my first and maybe last time posting an item.. on E bay.. I get at least a handful of questions everyday about my SP1200 some are of interest.. some are just irrelevant.. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to post my SP1200 and give fans a chance to obtain a item of such importance & history to me.. If you win the bid you can pay cash & collect it in person … not a problem.. I have a pleasant surprise for the winner of the SP…

Remember how Reloaded was going to be a free download of 15 new songs that dropped the day after the album? It turns out that it’s now going to be an official CD, with guest production from Alchemist, Just Blaze, Q-Tip, Madlib, Pete Rock, Ray West and Large Professor – not a remix album as was incorrectly reported elsewhere. Then again, if you read the latest Unkut interview with dude you’d know most of this already…
Also worth noting is the fact that Nutso has released his King Of The Project Hallway EP produced by Reefvia iTunes. You can’t lose with songs like ‘So Tired’ and ‘This Is My Hood’ with Royal Flush and Mic Geronimo.
And finally, the question for the day is:
Are there any rappers who you refuse to listen to on the strength of their stupid-ass name? Off the top of my head I’ve boycotted Lupe Fiasco, Red Cafe, Fabolous, and anyone with ‘Lil’ in their name who isn’t in M.O.P.
Be on the look-out for the Show & KRS-One album titled Godsville later this year. I’ve gotta say that I haven’t heard the Blastmasta sound this invigorated in a long time…must be the beats!
Looks like the rumors about Robert Robriguez’ fake trailer from Grindhouse getting made into a full-length feature were true after all!
Machette is hitting cinema’s on September 3, 2010.
Update/Late-pass: Damn…according to Wikipedia:
The United States release is set for September 3, 2010 by 20th Century Fox. On May 5, 2010, Robert Rodriguez responded to Arizona’s controversial immigration law by releasing an “illegal” trailer on Ain’t It Cool News. The fake trailer combined elements of the Machete trailer that appeared in Grindhouse with footage from the actual film, and implied that the film would be about Machete leading a revolt against anti-immigration politicians and border vigilantes. Several movie websites, including Internet Movie Database, reported that it was the official teaser for the film. However, Rodriguez later revealed the trailer to be a joke, explaining “it was Cinco de Mayo and I had too much tequila.” It has now been confirmed by Robert Rodriguez that a new trailer for Machete would be released with Predators.
