The first time I heard of Irv Gotti was his production credit for Mic Geronimo’s “Shit’s Real” single, back when he still held his DJ Irv handle. Soon afterwards, Mic G dropped his album on Blunt\/TVT, and his labelmates were a group called Cash Money Click, a three-man crew of little talent featuring a kid called Ja Rule, Chris Black and 01, who had a single which had the same as beat as Show & AG’s “Next LeveL (Remix)”, although nowhere near as good. At this stage, you could consider CMC as Mic Geronimo’s weed carriers, since he had a few minor hits at the time, and featured a shitty song called “Time To Build” with DMX, Jay-Z and Ja.<\/p>\n
Within a few years, DMX, Ja and Jay were all superstars, while poor ol’ Mic had to waste his recording budget paying Puff to guest on a song with him on an unsuccessful attempt at crossing-over on his second album. Meanwhile, Ja now had his own squad of weed holders called The Murderers, including Cadillac Tah, Black Child, Ashanti etc. At one stage, TVT sued Def Jam over a possible CMC release, and were awarded the ridiculous amount of $53 million in damages, which was eventually reduced to $12,000. Irv and Ja not only had these folks carrying weed for them, but an assortment of pills such as Exctasy and, in Irv’s case, even Viagra(?).<\/p>\n
At the height of their popularity, Patrick Swayze became the ever-valuable WWC (white weed carrier), and featured in a video with the fellas. DMX became enraged when Ja, who had carried weed for X for a minute, eclipsed his success with a smoothed-out version of his vocal style, although he may have just been sore that the Rule wasn’t holding his jumbs for him anymore. Jigga wisely stopped messing with either of them after a while.<\/p>\n
After shooting his mouth-off in magazines and showboating in videos about his gangster connections, the Feds finally took Gotti seriously and came down on him hard. I guess he forgot that “bad boys move in silence”. As for Mic Geronimo, chances are he’ll pop-up sooner or later with his own indy label and a mixtape full of Ja Rule disses in a desperate attempt to get attention (which will fail).
