Philant Johnson hands T.I. a doobie.

Why Are So Many Weed Carriers Being Shot?
Here’s Killer Mike, who once had a spark, on the Philant Johnson killing and violence in hip-hop:

I think the biggest insult since Philant has been killed is the [suggestion that] this is somehow rap-related because that doesn’t get to the real problem,” he says. “The real problem is that you have millions of young, angry, disenfranchised Latino, Black and poor white men who don’t have any real hope or outlet for hope.

My thing has always been this (nullus): If this isn’t a hip-hop thing, then why don’t you all of these killings occur in other genres of music? This year alone three major weed carriers have been shot and killed, not to mention a whole host of unimportant regional rappers (who or wtf is a Big Hawk?) and various assorted hangers on.

Just this weekend, I see Young Zee from The Outsidaz, who I’m sure someone on the Internets considers the GOAT, and KRS-One’s old weed carrier Hakim Green from Channel Live were stabbed outside of an Ice Cube concert at BB King’s in New York. Was somebody trying to rob them for the mad izm?

I don’t think it stands to reason that this can all be blamed on poverty and “disenfranchisement” because you don’t see any of this bullshit happening in genres of music created by poor white people like country or hair metal, or even in R&B which, quiet as it’s kept, is largely created by and for poor black people.

Also, as mentioned in Orlando Patterson’s recent op-ed in the New York Times, you don’t see the poor bastards who live in third world countries turn to crime at nearly the same rate as blacks here in the US. What’s the difference between them and jigs here in the US? Could it be hip-hop?

  1. P-Matik says:

Crack. That’s my answer and I’m sticking to it.

  2. Combat Jack says:

It’s a nefarious conspiracy by some weed carrier determined to murk all known and living w.c.’s in order to be the last and ONLY w.c. I think it’s Chinky.

  3. WILKOR says:

Killer Mike needs to leave the Latinos and the poor whites out of whatever point he is trying to make. It boils down to blacks killing blacks. The poor whites don’t do this shit to each other. We do! Whitey practice their racism in other ways but they definitely don’t go around shootin’ at us. We always do the gun bustin’. And it’s never at whitey (rich or poor). We shoot each other. It’s fucked up but that’s the TRUTH.

  4. Robbie says:

Mike’s right. It’s not rap related-it’s weed related!

dudes need a hug… their mothers didnt love them as children and now hes mad at the world. so now when someone look at him wrong all the bottled up anger breaks out… they should all move on to extacy and just love everybody haha

  6. Daddy Bones says:

That NY Times piece is interesting…and I can’t speak for nobody but I can sorta see why a lot of US black youth don’t want to align and “contribute” to a society that has been trying to kill them off, one way or another, for 400 years. Hell, I hate contributing to MY country and the UK has nowhere near the intensity of America’s problems.

Mind you, its still run by the same breed of idiot.

  7. dacoach says:

I don’t know if it’s hip-hop per se. But, there is definitely a mentality that goes with popular hip-hop that breeds the, “I’ll f*ck u up” mind-set”. Look at some of the Caribbean countries (I.E. Antigua, St. Kitts, ect.) that are breeding a hip-hop culture. You now have young men dropping out of school, the crime rate has gone up, and surprisingly you even have sects of the Bloods & Crips.

  8. cape says:

Im pretty sure Kanye West has something to do with this.

  9. Man says:

Say I dunno bout everyone else but you should your rap notes before talking about Big HawK. He may have been a Texas thang but he wasn’t like the rest of these rappers he was an originator. He had been going hard since the ealry 90’s. If you a real Smoker Check out his song Roll Up a Blunt and tell me he wasnt anybody. who the fuck is a young Zee?

  10. kapital says:

quoting mo better blues: “everything you just said is bullshit.”

the reason “you don’t see any of this bullshit happening in genres of music created by poor white people like country or hair metal…” is because when it does happen (yes it happens) it isn’t made into a story. black folks do not commit a disproportionate amount of crime or violence, suckas like you just believe so when they’re told.

  11. michael w says:

just cause you not up on something doesn’t mean you have to disrespect human life. who the fuck is big hawk? all i have to say to that is who the fuck are you?

  12. BIGHAWK says:

    UNIMPORTANT..WTFAMI…GETAFUKINCLUE@WIKIPEDIABITCH
